2007 Communities Collaborating Institute - October 15-19
Organized by Tamarack, An Institute for Community Engagement, this retreat will bring together community leaders with some of Canada’s leading experts on collaboration and social change. Aspen Institute

Westcoast Community Enterprises
This division of the Centre for Community Enterprise has been delivering the federal Self-Employment Benefits Program in Vancouver, B.C. for nearly ten years, and has been at the forefront of efforts to customize the program to the needs of inner-city social assistance recipients.

The Tompkins Institute
One of Canada's oldest post-secondary centres of CED training and research. Self Employment Development Initiatives

Council for the Advancement of Native Economic Developers (CANDO)
A national, Aboriginally-controlled organization devoted to training, education, and networking for economic development professionals in Canada's First Nation, Metis, and Inuit communities.

Community Action - Canada's Community Service Reporter
An independent periodical, on line and in print (monthly), on social policies and programs, especially in Canada. Includes events, funding allocations, appointments, postings, and publications.

Community Development Venture Capital Alliance
Since 1993, CDVCA has been the trade association of the community development venture capital industry. CDVCA promotes use of venture capital to create jobs, foster entrepreneurship, and realize wealth that improves the lives and work of low-income people and communities

National Congress for Community Economic Development
NCCED is the leading trade association for the community-based industry in the U.S.A., representing over 3,600 community development corporations. Its website features timely CED sector information, publications, and a program specific to the advancement of faith-based initiative.

Canadian Community Reinvestment Coalition
The CCRC advocates increased bank accountability on behalf of a membership of over 100 small business, labour, CED, and consumer groups, representing three million Canadians. (Website in French and English.)

Social Investment Organization
A national non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of a socially and environmentally sustainable society through socially responsible investment and corporate social responsibility.

Business Retention & Expansion
BR&E is a program of community-led research, liaison, and visitation with local businesses by means of which faltering enterprises can be assisted and closures can be anticipated or averted.

Enterprise Facilitation
This site offers a practitioner's-eye view of the Sirolli technique for igniting local entrepreneurship and relates it to comprehensive, community-controlled initiatives.

 

Samuel & Saidye Bronfman Family Foundation
Under the new cycle of its Urban Issues Program, this Foundation will award up to $30,000 a year for a period of up to three years to projects that unite urban conservation with community development, to protect and enhance life inside city neighbourhoods. Women's Enterprise Centre
WEC encourages and promotes entrepreneurship and business development to women in British Columbia through loans, financial assistance, and a complete range of business services.

Business for Social Responsibility
A very useful site for tracking world-wide developments in corporate social responsibility. BSR is a membership organization for companies that wish to advance commercial success while demonstrating respect for ethical values, people, communities, and the environment. BSR Education Fund, a research organization, offers on-line reports and resources on subjects that include social auditing, CED, others.

 

Detour's UrbanSource
A project of Moving the Economy (a sustainable transport partnership), Detour's UrbanSource is an on-line, nonprofit bookstore that has on offer over 300 books, magazines, videos, and CDs concerning sustainable transportation, urban planning, climate change, and other issues of critical importance in this time of Peak Oil.

Sustainable Development Information System

International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD)

A very creative post-secondary CED training and research program affiliated with Mount Allison University, New Brunswick.

Sustainable Communities
The Centre for Sustainable Community Development, an institutional arm of Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, offers a non-credit certificate program for CED professionals, in addition to its undergrad CED certificate and post-baccalaureate programs.

Pratt Institute Center for Community and Environmental Development (PICCED)
PICCED is the oldest university-based advocacy planning organization in the U.S.

Southern New Hampshire University CED Programs
SNHU is the most senior of North America's post-secondary CED training providers, now with both Masters- (including its National Weekend program, professional training institutes, and international program) and Doctoral-level accreditation.

 

The Greenlining Institute
Greenlining promotes low-income and minority economic development and increases minority community participation in policymaking.

Empowerment Zone and Enterprise Community Program
This program is an American initiative to afford communities opportunities for growth and revitalization.

The Centre for Creative Communities
This nonprofit research organization combats social apathy and promotes civic engagement by fostering dialogue between the community, public, and corporate sectors.

Neighborhood Planning
Based on a course at Virginia Tech University, this website introduces, topic by topic, a multidisciplinary approach to neighbourhood planning with the central theme of building social capital.
